On October 7, 2026, Germany and Mozambique held bilateral government negotiations in Maputo, during which new cooperation commitments totaling 89.45 million euros were established.
For four decades, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Mozambique have worked together in the areas of development cooperation and humanitarian aid. In both fields, Germany is one of the Mozambican government’s major bilateral partners.

With the new commitments made during the 2026 negotiations, Germany demonstrates strong, ongoing support for critical sectors. Key investment areas include the energy sector and a contribution to the Climate and Development Partnership, aimed at strengthening Mozambique’s climate resilience. This partnership, signed in 2024, supports climate and energy transition policy goals, bolsters climate resilience, and consolidates Mozambique’s position as a regional supplier of renewable energy in Southern Africa. At the opening ceremony of the bilateral government negotiations between Germany and Mozambique, the head of the Mozambican delegation and Director for Europe and Americas at Mozambique’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MINEC), Dr. António Bambissa, highlighted “Germany is a key cooperation partner. Our partnership is anchored in the government’s priorities and contributes to advancing strategic sectors such as energy, vocational training, good governance, and support for displaced people”.
The head of the German delegation and representative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Ms. Birgit Gerhardus, emphasized: “This year, we are not only celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between Mozambique and Germany. We are also reaffirming our partnership with Mozambique. Our cooperation shows concrete results. For example, our comprehensive cooperation in the energy sector contributed to the increase of the electrification rate of the country from 34% in 2019 to 66.9% today and to Mozambique’s Goal of Energy for All until 2030.”
Cooperation between Germany and Mozambique covers priority areas including good financial governance and decentralization; vocational training and employment promotion; private and financial sector development with a focus on agriculture, energy, and climate; as well as support to internally displaced persons in the North of the country.
