Police in the East Kyoga region have arrested a 35-year-old man in Soroti City over allegations of impersonation, theft, and unlawful possession of suspected government stores, including military attire belonging to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
The suspect, identified as Jonathan Ochola — who also goes by the aliases Peter Ekotu and Onoria — is a resident of Majengo Cell, Oderai Majengo Ward in Soroti City West Division. He was apprehended by the police Flying Squad following complaints originating from Katakwi District.
According to East Kyoga Regional Police Commander, Mr. Ibrahim Saiga, the suspect allegedly impersonated Colonel Peter Ekotu, a officer purportedly attached to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
"The suspect allegedly impersonated a number of officers and obtained Shs 1.2 million from a parent of an inmate in Katakwi, claiming he would secure bail for him," Mr. Saiga said.
Police investigations indicate that Ochola targeted the father of a murder suspect currently remanded at Katakwi Government Prison, promising to leverage his alleged position to secure court bail at the Soroti High Court.
Mr. Saiga added that preliminary findings show the suspect also contacted various public officials using threats and intimidation to solicit money. Witnesses further reported seeing him wearing UPDF military fatigue on several occasions.
A search conducted at the suspect's residence in Majengo Cell led to the recovery of two pairs of UPDF uniforms, desert boots, a UPDF bag, a cap, and several official documents. Among the seized items were Parish Development Model (PDM) documents containing details from Abim District, lists of inmates, and other UPDF-related paperwork.
The suspect is currently detained at Soroti City East Police Division pending further interrogation.
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspected cases of impersonation, extortion, or fraud to the nearest police station.
