Chris Evert’s inspiring journey: How family strength shaped her 18 Grand Slams

Chris Evert won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and spent 260 weeks at world No. 1, but one of the most important chapters of her life began away from the tennis court. Her father, Jimmy Evert, helped shape her game, while her sister Jeanne’s death from ovarian cancer led doctors to discover the same disease in Chris at an early stage.

Now, after announcing another cancer recurrence in June 2026, the American tennis legend faces a fresh challenge. Her story brings together sporting success, family loss and the importance of knowing your medical history.

How did Jimmy Evert help Chris Evert become a tennis champion?

Chris Evert grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in a family where tennis was a big part of daily life. Her father, Jimmy Evert, was a tennis coach who helped her learn the game from a young age. He also coached her siblings, making tennis a shared interest across the family.Chris began playing as a child and developed a two-handed backhand that became one of the best-known parts of her game. The shot helped her control rallies from the baseline, where she built her reputation for accuracy and consistency. Rather than relying only on power, she made opponents work for every point. Her rise became clear at the 1971 US Open. Aged 16, she reached the semifinals on her debut before losing to Billie Jean King.

That run brought her wider attention and marked the beginning of a career that would place her among the greatest players in women’s tennis.Evert went on to win 18 Grand Slam singles titles: seven at the French Open, six at the US Open, three at Wimbledon and two at the Australian Open. She also won 125 consecutive matches on clay between 1973 and 1979, a record that underlined her control on the surface. The Women’s Tennis Association records 154 singles titles for Evert and a career win-loss record of 1,304-144.

She became the first world No. 1 when the WTA introduced its computer rankings in November 1975 and spent 260 weeks at the top.Her calm manner on court earned her the nickname “The Ice Maiden”. But her achievements were not built on results alone. Her ability to stay focused during long rallies and high-pressure matches became a defining part of her game.

What role did Colette Evert and Jeanne Evert play in Chris Evert’s life?

While Jimmy helped Chris develop her tennis skills, her mother, Colette, and her siblings were part of the family life that continued alongside her career.

Chris grew up with four siblings: Drew, John, Jeanne and Clare. Tennis connected them, but their relationship went beyond the sport.Jeanne Evert Dubin also played professional tennis. The sisters travelled on tour, played the game together and raised their children while remaining close. In February 2020, Jeanne died at the age of 62 after a two-and-a-half-year battle with ovarian cancer.Chris spoke publicly about the loss, describing Jeanne as someone she admired for her character and devotion to the people she loved.

In a tribute shared after her sister’s death, Chris wrote that they had grown up and played on tour together and raised their children together. The loss later became closely connected to Chris’s own health. After Jeanne’s death, doctors revisited a blood sample that had been stored for genetic testing. New information about a genetic variant led to further testing, which showed that Jeanne carried a BRCA-related risk.

Chris was then advised to get tested and also tested positive. That discovery changed what followed. In December 2021, Chris underwent a preventive hysterectomy. Doctors found cancer in a fallopian tube and one ovary, along with cancer cells in fluid around her reproductive organs. The disease was classified as Stage 1C.She later underwent chemotherapy. Her diagnosis became public in January 2022, when she explained that she wanted to raise awareness about family history and the importance of testing when there may be an inherited risk.Jeanne’s death was devastating, but the information uncovered after her passing helped doctors find Chris’s cancer earlier than they might otherwise have done. The experience gave the tennis champion a deeply personal reason to speak about genetic testing and women’s health.

How has Chris Evert’s cancer battle changed her life?

Chris initially announced that she had Stage 1C ovarian cancer in January 2022. She completed chemotherapy and later said she was cancer-free.

However, the disease returned in December 2023, requiring further treatment. In June 2024, Evert shared positive news about her recovery. But the challenge returned once again in June 2026, when she announced that she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer for a third time.In a statement shared on social media on June 25, 2026, Evert said she had undergone surgery after CT and PET scans showed that the cancer had returned.

She also said she would begin chemotherapy in the coming weeks and would miss Wimbledon that year to focus on her health.“Ovarian cancer is relentless, but I will stay optimistic and determined in continuing to fight this battle,” she said. Her latest diagnosis has added another difficult chapter to her health journey. She has spoken openly about her experiences, hoping that sharing her story will encourage other women to learn about their family medical history and seek medical advice when needed.Evert’s experience also shows why genetic testing can matter for families with a history of certain cancers. However, testing and screening decisions depend on a person’s medical history and should be discussed with qualified healthcare professionals. Her story has reached far beyond tennis because it connects a familiar sporting figure with an issue that affects families around the world.

What makes Chris Evert’s legacy bigger than her ?

Evert retired from professional tennis in 1989, but she remained involved in the sport as a commentator, mentor and supporter of young players.

Her career included 18 Grand Slam singles titles, eight Fed Cup team titles with the United States and an induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1995.Her influence can also be seen in the way she played. Evert helped make the two-handed backhand a defining shot in women’s tennis, using control and consistency to compete against some of the strongest players of her generation.Away from the court, she became a mother to three sons, Alexander, Nicholas and Colton.

Her experiences with cancer also gave her a reason to speak publicly about genetic risk and early diagnosis. There is an important difference between the challenges Evert faced in tennis and those she has faced with cancer. A match has a score and an end point. A serious illness does not offer the same certainty. Her openness about her diagnosis has helped bring attention to the importance of family history and medical care.

Evert’s story is not simply about staying calm or being strong. It is about how a life built around competition can take on a different meaning after personal loss. Her achievements on court are part of her legacy, but so is her willingness to speak about a difficult experience that may help other families ask important questions about their health.
