Overview:
Performance: AI processors differ in compute power, memory bandwidth, and architecture, making workload-specific comparisons essential.
Memory and Scaling: Large memory pools and fast interconnects help manage complex models and large-scale AI training.
Choosing Hardware: NVIDIA, AMD, Google, Intel, AWS, and Cerebras offer different advantages based on cost, efficiency, and workload needs.
Artificial intelligence workloads have pushed chipmakers into a race unlike any other industry. Training a large language model or running inference at scale now depends on raw silicon power, not just clever algorithms. Buyers, researchers, and cloud providers all want to know which processor delivers the best mix of speed, memory, and efficiency.
This race has produced standout chips from NVIDIA, AMD, Google, Intel, AWS, and Cerebras. Each one takes a different approach to memory bandwidth, compute precision, and interconnect design. Understanding these specs helps decision-makers pick hardware that fits their workload instead of chasing marketing claims.
NVIDIA Blackwell B200
NVIDIA's B200 remains the benchmark that rivals measure themselves against. It packs 208 billion transistors on a single package, built using a dual-die design.
Memory: 192GB of HBM3e
Bandwidth: up to 8 TB/s
NVLink: 1.8 TB/s per GPU with fifth-generation NVLink
Power Draw: up to 1,000W
A full GB200 NVL72 rack, built from 72 B200 GPUs, reaches 720 petaFLOPS at FP4 precision
These numbers explain why hyperscalers keep ordering B200 clusters despite steep power and cooling costs.

AMD Instinct MI325X and MI355X
AMD has positioned its Instinct line as the direct Blackwell challenger, leaning on memory capacity as its selling point.
MI325X: 256GB of HBM3E memory, 1.3 petaflops at FP16, and 2.61 petaflops at FP8
MI355X: up to 288GB of HBM3E, 8 TB/s bandwidth, 4.6 petaflops at FP8, and 9.2 petaflops at FP4
Built on TSMC's 3nm process node
The larger memory pool on these chips suits workloads involving huge context windows and retrieval-heavy applications, where keeping more data close to the compute core avoids costly transfers.
Google TPU v7 Ironwood
Google designs its Tensor Processing Units for its own data centers first, which keeps the architecture tightly matched to its software stack.
Peak Compute: 2,307 TFLOPS at BF16 and 4,614 TFLOPS at FP8 per chip
Memory: 192GiB of HBM, split across two chiplets
Bandwidth: 7,380 GB/s per chip
Pod Scale: up to 9,216 chips linked in a single pod
Interconnect: 1,200 GBps bidirectional bandwidth between neighboring chips
Google rents this hardware through Google Cloud rather than selling it outright, which keeps pricing tied to usage rather than upfront purchase.
Intel Gaudi 3
Intel built Gaudi 3 around networking efficiency rather than chasing the highest compute figure. The chip carries 128GB of HBM2e memory with roughly 3.7 TB/s of bandwidth. It ships with 24 built-in 200 gigabit Ethernet ports, cutting reliance on costly proprietary interconnects when scaling across many nodes.
Cerebras WSE-3
Cerebras takes a different path, building one giant chip instead of linking many smaller ones.
Core count: roughly 900,000 AI-optimized cores
Transistor count: 4 trillion
Die size: 46,225 square millimeters, the largest commercial chip made today
This wafer-scale design removes chip-to-chip communication during training, which can shorten training time for certain large models.
AWS Trainium2
Amazon's in-house silicon targets customers already running workloads on AWS infrastructure. Trainium2 chips group into UltraServers, pooling memory and compute across multiple chips to train frontier-scale models without relying on third-party GPUs. Amazon markets this chip mainly on cost per training run rather than headline FLOPS.
What these Specs Mean for Buyers
Raw numbers only tell part of the story. Memory bandwidth decides how fast a chip feeds data to its compute cores, which matters more for inference than peak FLOPS alone. Interconnect speed decides how well chips scale together in large clusters, a factor that grows critical once training moves beyond a single server.
Buyers should match specs to their actual workload. Training massive foundation models favors chips with large memory pools and fast interconnects, such as the MI325X or TPU v7. Inference-heavy deployments often favor efficiency and lower power draw over raw peak performance.

Final Words
The AI processor market has moved well beyond a simple contest over transistor counts. Every major chipmaker now balances memory capacity, bandwidth, interconnect design, and power efficiency against the demands of training and inference workloads. NVIDIA still leads on ecosystem support, but AMD, Google, Intel, and Cerebras have each carved out real advantages in memory, networking, or architecture suited to particular use cases.
Organizations evaluating these chips should look past headline FLOPS figures and study how each processor performs on their own workloads. The right choice depends on budget, scale, and whether the priority is training new models or serving inference at volume. As competition intensifies, these specs will keep shifting, and buyers who track them closely stand to make far better infrastructure decisions.
FAQs
1. Which AI processor currently offers the highest memory bandwidth?
Google's TPU v7 Ironwood leads with 7,380 GB/s per chip, slightly ahead of AMD's MI355X at 8 TB/s combined across its memory stacks, both outperforming most GPU competitors on raw data throughput for large models.
2. Why does memory capacity matter more than FLOPS for some AI tasks?
Large models with long context windows need memory close to the compute core. Chips with bigger memory pools, like the MI325X at 256GB, avoid slow data transfers that otherwise bottleneck performance during inference.
3. What makes the Cerebras WSE-3 different from standard GPUs?
It uses an entire silicon wafer as one chip instead of linking separate GPUs together. This removes chip-to-chip communication delays, which can meaningfully speed up training for certain large-scale models.
4. Is NVIDIA still the best choice for every AI workload?
Not always. NVIDIA offers the strongest software ecosystem, but AMD, Google, and Intel chips often provide better memory capacity, networking, or cost efficiency depending on whether the workload favors training or inference.
5. How does power consumption affect AI processor choice?
Chips like the B200 draw up to 1,000W, raising cooling and electricity costs significantly. Buyers running large clusters must weigh raw performance against total power costs, which can shape long-term infrastructure budgets.
