KWAZULU-NATAL — A foreign national was killed in Durban's central business district on 22 October 2026 after a group of approximately 50 people attacked him. He was declared dead at the scene.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that a murder case had been opened and that investigators were actively pursuing leads.
What happened in Durban's CBD?
According to Colonel Netshiunda, a group of marchers was moving along Dr Pixley kaSeme Street when two individuals broke away from the crowd and approached the victim, who was standing on the roadside. The two men appeared to speak with him before the situation escalated.
"It is further alleged that the victim was then assaulted by a group of about 50 people and he was declared dead at the scene," Colonel Netshiunda said.
The victim was described as a man in his late 30s or early 40s. His nationality had not been formally confirmed at the time of reporting.
Investigators are relying on CCTV footage from the area to piece together the sequence of events and identify those responsible. The footage reportedly captured the moment two men separated from the marching group and made contact with the victim before the assault took place.
"Police are following several leads and using all investigative aids to identify possible suspects," Netshiunda said.
The attack occurred in proximity to a protest march related to a Constitutional Court ruling on asylum seekers, amid ongoing national tensions around immigration and the presence of undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa.
No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
