Australia are considering major changes after South Africa handed them an innings-and-31-run defeat in the second Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Thursday, 22 October 2026. Captain Pat Cummins has acknowledged that his team must address its shortcomings before the decisive third Test in Cape Town.
The defeat levelled the three-match series at 1-1 after Australia won the opening Test by 214 runs. Australia were dismissed for just 99 in their first innings before Travis Head’s 121 helped them reach 295 in their second innings.
Speaking after the defeat, Cummins admitted Australia needed to improve.
“Clearly need to be a lot better than that if we want to compete,” he said, as quoted by AFP.
“I think a loss can sometimes kick you into gear. You can maybe paper over the cracks sometimes in a win. Whereas I think in a loss, it makes you ask questions as a player of yourself.”
Marnus Labuschagne and Nic Maddinson face selection pressure
Marnus Labuschagne is under scrutiny after going more than three years without a Test century. Cummins said the batter needed to convert promising starts into bigger scores.
Nic Maddinson is also vulnerable after recording scores of 0, 48, 0 and 8 across the first two Tests. All-rounder Beau Webster could also be considered for replacement.
Cameron Green's return could trigger Australia changes
Cameron Green is expected to be available for the final Test, while Josh Inglis is another option. Cooper Connolly could also come into contention.
Scott Boland strengthened his case to retain his place by taking five wickets in the first innings and scoring 40 runs from 166 deliveries. Australia must also decide whether to recall spinner Nathan Lyon, depending on the Cape Town pitch.
Australia prepare for decisive Cape Town Test
Cummins acknowledged the difficulty of deciding when to persist with players and when to make changes.
“Do you give someone one more game, or do you feel like now is the right time to make a move?” he said.
The third Test begins on Tuesday, 27 October, at Newlands. Australia must settle their selection questions quickly, with the series title at stake.

Kevin Pietersen proposes free entry to boost South Africa Test crowds
Briefly News previously reported that former England batter Kevin Pietersen called on cricket administrators to make Test matches free at venues struggling to attract spectators.
His proposal came amid concerns about sparse crowds during South Africa’s series against Australia, with Pietersen arguing that franchise competitions should provide more of cricket’s revenue. His comments have added another dimension to the debate about how to bring fans back to Test cricket.
