In a significant advancement for small and medium-sized enterprises, NetApp and Oracle have teamed up to launch a fully managed cloud storage service designed to streamline the management of essential artificial intelligence (AI) and enterprise workloads. This collaboration aims to enhance the capabilities of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) with NetApp’s ONTAP® data management, offering small business owners a pathway to simplify their cloud journey without compromising on data management functionality.
The new Oracle Cloud Infrastructure NetApp Storage Service merges the strengths of both companies, providing small businesses with a robust solution for migrating and managing their critical data assets. With cloud adoption rapidly accelerating, organizations often face challenges in transitioning their data workloads to a cloud environment without sacrificing operational efficiency. This service addresses those concerns directly.
“Customers want the flexibility to move AI and enterprise workloads to the cloud without giving up operational simplicity, data management, and reliability,” stated Pravjit Tiwana, Senior Vice President and General Manager at NetApp. This reflects the growing demand from small businesses for tools that ensure a seamless cloud migration experience.
The OCI NetApp Storage Service allows enterprises to manage their storage through the OCI Console, Software Development Kits (SDKs), and ONTAP APIs, preserving familiar operational workflows. Small business owners can migrate existing ONTAP-based workloads to the cloud with minimal redesign required, which protects their investments in software and training while easing the transition.
For businesses operating in regulated industries, such as finance or healthcare, the new storage service allows for consistent data management, high availability, security, and predictable performance. These elements are crucial for organizations that need to comply with stringent regulations while maximizing the benefits of cloud technologies.
As Konstantinos Papamiltiadis, Senior Vice President of Partnerships at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, puts it, “Enterprises shouldn’t have to rebuild their data infrastructure to move to the cloud.” This responsiveness to the needs of small and mid-sized businesses emphasizes a shift in focus toward how these organizations manage their data, rather than the complexities of infrastructure and operations.
In a world where data is becoming a crucial component of competitive strategy, this partnership offers an attractive proposition. Small business owners can expect not only to modernize their operations but also to protect their vital data and enhance their ability to leverage AI-driven applications. “By bringing a native ONTAP-based storage service to OCI, we are combining OCI’s scale and performance with NetApp’s enterprise data capabilities to empower customers to run mission-critical workloads,” said Alvaro Celis, Senior Vice President at NetApp. This sentiment encapsulates the service’s purpose: enabling businesses to focus on delivering value through their data.
While the benefits are considerable, small business owners should be aware of potential challenges as they consider this new service. Transitioning data storage to the cloud, even in a managed environment, can pose risks such as data security concerns, potential downtime during migration, and ongoing cost assessments. Additionally, businesses may need to invest time in training or upskilling their teams to effectively use the new service. Understanding these factors will be essential in making an informed decision about when and how to adopt this technology.
The OCI NetApp Storage Service is set to become generally available within the next 12 months, offering a timely solution for small businesses looking to harness the power of the cloud while maintaining data integrity. With the landscape of remote work and AI rapidly evolving, having a reliable and efficient data management system in place could be a game-changer for small and medium-sized enterprises.
