Why the Hilton Aspire is still my favorite hotel credit card after more than 5 years

Every October, when the annual fee on my Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card posts, I take another look at whether it deserves a place in my wallet.

I hold multiple premium credit cards and pay more than $3,000 in combined annual fees across my 25-plus cards. That makes it important to distinguish the benefits I actually use from the ones that look impressive on paper.

The Aspire has remained my favorite hotel credit card for more than five years. This month, I renewed it again.

Between a memorable free night in Copenhagen, Diamond benefits that improve my stays abroad and statement credits I can work into my travel plans, I continue to receive far more value than the card's $550 annual fee (see rates and fees).

Here's how I use it — and why it still isn't the card I reach for when paying for most hotel stays.

My best free night certificate redemption yet

The annual free night reward is one of the Aspire's headline benefits. Cardmembers receive one in their first year and another each year upon renewal.

In July, I used mine at Nimb Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark — and I think it was my best Hilton redemption yet.

Copenhagen is an expensive hotel market, and cash rates for my night were above $1,000. Nimb sits across from Central Station, making it convenient to get to and from the airport, and overlooks Tivoli Gardens.

The historic property felt special from the moment I arrived. I received an upgrade to a huge suite with a separate shower and bathtub, plus a generous selection of complimentary snacks and nonalcoholic drinks. Many were Danish products, which made the minibar more interesting than the usual assortment.

I suspect my one-night stay improved my chances of an upgrade during the busy summer season, though I can't know for certain.

One of my favorite moments was floating in the rooftop pool at sunset, enjoying Copenhagen's long summer evening. The next morning, I had a delicious breakfast overlooking the gardens with a local friend.

The spacious, well-equipped gym was also one of the best I've encountered in a hotel, and the service throughout my stay was excellent.

Hotel guests receive admission and unlimited ride access to Tivoli Gardens. I got a wristband, but with school vacation crowds and long lines, I skipped the rides and just walked around.

I would happily have stayed another night. However, that required more than 120,000 Hilton points or over $1,000 in cash, so I moved on.

I wouldn't normally pay that much for one night at a hotel. Still, the certificate gave me access to a memorable stay that would otherwise have been difficult to justify.

How I'm stacking Hilton's resort credit for $600 in value

The Aspire offers up to $400 in Hilton resort statement credits each calendar year: up to $200 from January through June and another up to $200 from July through December.

The credit currently applies only to about 320 participating properties, so I check Hilton's list of eligible resorts before booking.

For next summer, I've reserved three nights at the Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa in northern Croatia. I'm planning to visit with my parents after a trip through Slovenia.

Rather than waiting until checkout, I've been making deposits toward the reservation. Last December, I emailed the front desk for a payment link, then charged a $200 deposit to my Aspire. I repeated that in March, and both credits have posted.

My next step is to make a third $200 deposit before the end of the year, bringing the amount covered by credits to $600 by the time I arrive. (That total spans three benefit periods; the annual allowance remains $400.)

I've successfully used this approach at the Boeira Garden Hotel Porto Gaia (a Curio Collection property), in Porto, Portugal. I paid a $200 deposit in one benefit period and then applied another $200 credit toward the balance at checkout in a later period.

There are trade-offs. My Croatia deposits are nonrefundable, although I can change the dates while keeping the same reservation. I'd recommend confirming the hotel's payment and cancellation policies before trying this approach.

For a trip I'm already planning, this strategy helps me use credits that might otherwise expire.

How I maximize the flight credit

The Hilton Aspire's flight credit is easier to fit into my card strategy.

Cardmembers can receive up to $50 in statement credits each calendar quarter (for up to $200 annually) on eligible airfare purchased directly from an airline, the Amex Travel App™ or through American Express Travel®.

In previous quarters, I've received credits after paying for seat upgrades or baggage fees. Recently, I've been using the benefit for inexpensive flights around Europe.

Since moving to Spain a year ago, I've found that many short-haul flights cost less than comparable domestic trips I used to take in the U.S.

For a long weekend in Ibiza next month, I booked a round-trip flight from Madrid directly through Iberia for $72. My $50 statement credit posted four days later, bringing my net airfare cost to just $22.

Some award-ticket taxes and fees have also triggered the credit for me, although this may depend on how the airline processes the transaction.

I keep reminders to use benefits like this. With flights already part of my travel plans, maximizing all four quarterly credits is a realistic way for me to receive $200 annually without unnecessary spending.

What Diamond status actually gets me outside the U.S.

The Aspire includes complimentary Hilton Honors Diamond status. Diamond Reserve sits above it, but I still find Diamond rewarding, particularly abroad.

At participating brands outside the U.S., the breakfast benefit is a complimentary continental breakfast (for the member and one registered guest). Many of my stays have included a more substantial breakfast, which I prefer to the daily food-and-beverage credit generally offered at participating U.S. properties.

Space-available room upgrades and executive lounge access also elevate my stays. Lounges usually have a smaller food selection than the main restaurant, but I enjoy the calmer atmosphere and often more attentive service.

During Eurovision earlier this year, I stayed at the Hilton Vienna Park. Its evening lounge spread was substantial enough to make an early dinner out of it, saving me the cost of a meal.

Offerings vary by property, so I wouldn't assume every happy hour can replace dinner. In Vienna, though, it was a benefit I looked forward to using.

Diamond also makes me eligible for Hilton's fifth-night-free benefit on qualifying standard-room reward stays booked entirely with points. (This is available to Silver members and above, so it isn't exclusive to Diamond.) I used it more frequently during longer trips; these days, my hotel stays tend to be shorter.

Where the Aspire doesn't win

Despite those benefits, I only use the Hilton Aspire for purchases that help me use its statement credits.

Other cards offer a better return

For paid Hilton stays, I use my Chase Sapphire Reserve® (see rates and fees).

The Aspire earns 14 Hilton points per dollar on eligible purchases made directly with Hilton properties. At TPG's October 2026 valuation of 0.4 cents per point, that's a 5.6% return.

The Reserve earns 4 transferable Chase Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on hotels booked directly. At our October 2026 valuation of 2.05 cents per point, that's a superior 8.2% return on purchases that earn rewards.

I still receive my eligible Hilton base points and Diamond bonus when paying with the Reserve.

Hilton points have a relatively low valuation

Hilton points sit below IHG points at 0.6 cents, Marriott points at 0.75 cents and Hyatt points at 1.65 cents in our October 2026 valuations.

I can still find high-value redemptions, but doing so takes research.

When I need to top up my Hilton balance, I generally prefer buying points during a promotion over transferring American Express Membership Rewards points. A transfer bonus can change that calculation, but I compare the alternatives first.

Some benefits are less useful to me

The U.S. food-and-beverage credit is less appealing to me than the breakfasts I've received abroad. Its value depends on the property, and it may not cover the breakfast I would otherwise order.

The Aspire also offers up to $219 in annual Clear+ statement credits (enrollment required, subject to auto-renewal). I already use my American Express Platinum Card® for that membership, so I don't count the Aspire's duplicate benefit in my math.

Bottom line

The Hilton Aspire continues to earn its place in my wallet because I can use its benefits without significantly changing my travel habits. Fully utilizing the up to $400 in annual Hilton resort credits and up to $200 in flight credits can more than offset the card's $550 annual fee, even before accounting for the annual free night reward and Diamond status.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a refresh and a higher fee within the next year. That's speculation, but any increase would prompt me to reassess it.

That doesn't mean it's the best card for every Hilton purchase. I still prefer earning transferable Chase Ultimate Rewards points on most paid Hilton stays, but the Aspire's ongoing benefits make it worth keeping for my travel patterns.

For prospective cardmembers, the current welcome offer is the highest we've seen: Earn 200,000 bonus Hilton Honors points after spending $6,000 on purchases in the first six months of card membership. The offer ends Jan. 13, 2027, making this a particularly strong time to apply if the card fits your travel habits.

For me, a sunset swim in Copenhagen and a head start on next summer's family trip to Croatia made renewing for another year an easy decision.
