A Faridpur court today (15 October) sentenced a 25-year-old man to death for raping an eight-year-old third-grade student on her way to school in Alfadanga Upazila of the district in 2021.
The court also fined the convict, Akidul Sheikh, Tk2 lakh. He is the son of Selim Sheikh of Nawapara village in the upazila.
Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Abul Bashar Mia, who is also the district and sessions judge, delivered the verdict today. The convict, Akidul, was present in court when the verdict was announced and was later sent to jail under police escort.
State counsel Advocate Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan confirmed the matter, saying the court had underscored the importance of ensuring children's safety and taking prompt legal action when allegations of such crimes are made.
According to the case statement, the incident took place around 10am on 20 June 2021, when the child was walking to school. Following rainfall, water had accumulated beside the road.
Akidul offered to take the child across the muddy road to school, but instead took the child to a nearby bamboo grove, raped the child, and fled, the statement states.
The child reached school bleeding. Teachers, alarmed by the child's condition, learned what had happened and informed the family. The child was first taken to Alfadanga Upazila Health Complex and later admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital as the condition deteriorated, it added.
On 21 June 2021, the child's father filed a rape case against Akidul at Alfadanga Police Station.
Police later investigated the case and submitted a charge sheet to the court.
After trial and a review of the evidence and witness testimony, the court found Akidul guilty and handed down the death sentence and fine.
