Another week, another NFLvillain emerges as Public Enemy No. 1. Buffalo Bills veteran safety CJ Gardner-Johnson came under fire on Sunday afternoon after he was ejected from the team’s hard-fought Week 6 win over hard-fought win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Gardner-Johnson was ejected after spitting at Raiders tight end Brock Bowers, which drew immediate criticism online. One action that immediately crosses the line is spitting at an opponent, but Gardner-Johnson went there and will now face the consequences.
There is no doubt that Gardner-Johnson will be hit with a fine from the league office for his unsportsmanlike conduct, but it will be interesting to see if punishment will go as far as a suspension.
To learn the full extent of Gardner-Johnson’s punishment, we will have to wait, but we did not need to wait for the Instagram apology. The Bills defensive back took to social media to drop a lengthy statement on Instagram Stories, vowing to be better and hold himself to a higher standard.

CJ Gardner-Johnson Apologizes For On-Field Spitting Incident
“My passion and competitive nature have always been a huge part of who I am, but I also understand that there is a line that should never be crossed,” Gardner-Johnson wrote. “The gesture I made toward my opponent was inappropriate, unnecessary, and not a reflection of the respect I have for him or this game.
“There is no excuse for my actions, and I take full accountability. No matter how emotional or intense the competition gets, I have to hold myself to a higher standard. To my opponent, I sincerely apologize. We compete hard between those lines, but respect should always remain at the forefront.”
You have to give it to Gardner-Johnson; on the surface, it is a heartfelt apology. Hopefully, he means the words that were shared with his followers, because there is no place in football for spitting on an opponent.

At the end of the day, it will be a lesson, and any punishment that he faces will be well-deserved.
Gardner-Johnson concluded, “One moment does not define my character, but how I respond to that moment matters. I will learn from this, grow from it, and continue to lead with the integrity, passion, and respect that have carried me throughout my career.”
