Plan International Malawi has hailed NBS Bank and Football Association of Malawi (Fam) for supporting the Green Girls Boarding School initiative in Mzimba District.
The organisation’s Country Director, Mwape Mulumbi, made the remarks when she received a K103.8 million donation from Fam and NBS for the project.
The handover ceremony of the donation was held in Lilongwe on Wednesday.
Mulumbi said both Fam and NBS are not just supporting education but also empowering the girl child.
“Through the initiative, the girls will save a lot of time and dedicate more of it towards studying or resting, enabling them to be more effective and better absorb what they are learning,” she said.
The funds were generated through the 2026 Charity Shield between traditional rivals Mighty Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on April 18.
Fam President Fleetwood Haiya said football has the power to transform lives.
“Football is beyond the pitch. Football is beyond 90 minutes. So today we have demonstrated that football goes beyond the pitch,” he said.
NBS Bank Chief Wholesale Banking Officer Alfred Nhlema said the donation reflects their commitment to make an impact on education and the environment through football.
“We believe that football is played beyond the pitch. That is why we decided to partner with Fam because what we see beyond the match is the impact on lives,” he said.
Through the project, Plan International Malawi will construct a solar-powered clean cooking kitchen and a girls’ hostel at Emvuyeni Community Day Secondary School in the district..
The project is expected to benefit over 2,000 learners through the introduction of clean cooking solutions aimed at creating a sustainable and conducive learning environment
