“Out of all the foundations that have launched lately, these are the ones that are worth knowing about,” says Charlotte Bitmead, Stylist’s senior beauty writer.
Just like buying new stationery for the start of the school term used to make us feel like autumn had finally arrived, as grown-ups, it’s now usually marked by a flurry of foundation launches. From September onwards, we have to decipher which ones are really worth the hype and which ones are duds.
It makes sense that we might want to invest in a new base for the winter months. Gone are the days of summer when we might have ditched foundation altogether for fear that we’d immediately sweat it off on our morning commutes or it would interrupt our diligent SPF reapplication. However, colder weather means we might need something hydrating to battle the brisk winds or something heavy-duty enough to cover any redness that might occur during weather changes.
For me, testing a new foundation is as exciting as make-up launches get, which is why I trial every single one that lands on my desk. From the lightweight skin tint to the heavy coverage formulas, here are the new foundations that are actually worth investing in this winter.
Mac Studio Radiance Skin Tint Stick
This new Skin Tint Stick is one of the most exciting launches from Mac to date. Unlike most stick foundations that can be a bit stiff to blend, this serum-foundation hybrid glides on to deliver a hydrating, glass-like finish. Coverage-wise, it’s pretty lightweight and sheer, but the radiance it delivers is undeniable. It won’t necessarily cover up a breakout, but I reach for this on no-make-up make-up days or when I’m in a rush.
Tower28 Swipe Serum Foundation
Another serum-foundation hybrid, this sensitive-skin friendly formula claims to last 16 hours, smooth texture and deliver hours of hydration. Despite not containing any silicones (which usually gives formulas a bit of slip), this silky formula blends out with one swipe of a brush and really does deliver a natural, dewy glow. The undertones are spot on for my pale skin and it didn’t spark any sensitivity for my temperamental skin.
Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Fluid Flex Foundation
I was the biggest fan of Fenty Beauty’s original foundation, so I was a bit gutted to hear it was being discontinued. However, the replacement is a pretty good substitute. The new Fluid Flex Foundation is definitely more lightweight than the OG, but doesn’t skimp on coverage. It starts off matte but wears beautifully throughout the day to look really natural, despite how well it covers imperfections and redness.
Suqqu The Foundation
Suqqu is the secret weapon behind a lot of make-up artist kits, and this new foundation proves why. I usually struggle with the shade range, but for this formula there are 24 shades to pick from, so I found my perfect fit. The coverage it provides is very impressive, especially considering how creamy and natural-looking the formula is. It’s luminous, smooth and keeps skin looking fresh for hours.
Westman Atelier Suprême Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation
I’ve previously raved about how Westman Atelier’s new Suprême Bio-Complex Liquid Foundation is one of my favourite base products of the year, and I haven’t changed my mind since. The undertones are spot on, and the buttery formula blurs and disguises any spots like a pro. It feels like there’s nothing on my skin, and I love the brightness it adds to my complexion.
