Alabama enters the game sitting at 5-1. They started the season with a 48-10 win over the East Carolina Pirates in Week 1. They went on to secure quality wins over the Kentucky Wildcats (45-17), the Florida State Seminoles (50-36), the South Carolina Gamecocks (49-18) and the then-No. 16 Mississippi State Bulldogs (56-23). Keys to Alabama vs. Tennessee football matchup
Ryan Coleman-Williams, a junior receiver who leads Alabama with 23 receptions for 415 yards and four touchdowns, will miss the game. The team ruled him out earlier this week due to a concussion he suffered last week against Georgia. Sophomore Lotzeir Brooks will serve as Keelon Russell’s primary target. Brooks has had similar production to that of Coleman-Williams, making 23 catches for 389 yards and a touchdown. Russell looks to maintain his passing efficiency, throwing for 1,599 yards and 12 touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing 46 times for 225 yards and four touchdowns. Traeshawn Brown leads the run game with 51 carries for 301 yards and five touchdowns, while Daniel Hill comes next with 55 rushes for 262 yards and four touchdowns.
Through six games this season, Alabama has come up with nine interceptions. From those nine, four have been returned for touchdowns. Red Morgan, Yhonzae Pierre, Dijon Lee Jr., and Luke Metz have all have generated pick-six scores. Metz leads the pack with 43 tackles and a fumble recovery on top of the pick-6 interception. Caleb Woodson has 42 tackles and two sacks and two pass deflections, while Bray Hubbard recorded 26 tackles and two pass deflections and two interceptions.
Even though he rushed for just 42 yards against Kennesaw State and 34 against Texas, Tennessee junior DeSean Bishop ranks seventh in the country with 678 yards. Faizon Brandon is on pace to play in this game, but he won’t be fully healthy as he recovers from a nagging shoulder injury dating back to the Texas loss. This season has him throwing for 697 yards and seven touchdowns and one interception while rushing 53 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns so far. Mike Matthews leads the receiving attack with 22 catches for 396 yards and three touchdowns, while Braylon Staley has made 24 receptions for 193 yards and two touchdowns.
The Vols’ defense has significantly improved from last season. They possess a 25th ranking in the country in total yards allowed with 293.7 yards per game. They even lead the nation with 25 sacks, including five from tackle Xavier Gilliam. Edge Tyree Weathersby has 4.5 and edge Mariyon Dye has 4. Tennessee’s 48 tackles for loss rank fourth in the nation. Amare Campbell leads the group with 38 tackles and three pass deflections, while Arion Carter has 38 tackles and two fumble recoveries. Meanwhile, Dejuan Lane has 23 tackles, three pass deflections, two sacks, and two interceptions with one of them being a pick-6 score.
Alabama vs. TennesseePrediction and Pick
This matchup between Alabama and Tennessee stands out as an intriguing matchup. Both squads aspire to be firm in the CFP picture, making this contest a significant one. The Crimson Tide have ways to make up for Ryan Coleman-Williams’ absence with their receiving depth. Meanwhile, the Vols will be busy trying to protect their starting quarterback’s health. It will be a matter of who makes more explosive plays in a tightly competitive matchup, which the Crimson Tide stand out the most with that advantage. Alabama gets the win in this one and covers, while the under also hits.
Final Alabama vs. Tennessee Prediction and Pick: Alabama -7.5 (-115) and under 51 (-110)
