First and foremost, let me begin by acknowledging the effort of our Past Nigerian leaders, who toiled and moiled the prosperity and the integrity of our beloved country, who without their selfless service the nation would have been dependent over and over. The citizens of Nigeria will forever remain grateful to your services.
Initially, I intend to a passer-by because a lot has been said, but eventually I deemed it a necessary to join some Nigerians to celebrate our nation’s independent on October 1, 1960.
This piece is aimed at highlighting the condition of Nigerians when we got our independence from Britain and the situation we’re experiencing now, and how our future will look like.
The most enjoyable and best time Nigerians have ever had was the era of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and premier of Northern Nigeria because it was a era of peace, harmony and unity among Nigerians. It was an era when a leader is afraid of treating his people wrong because he believed that power is transient. It was an era when a citizen didn’t know what tribalism meant, they were trained to be good ambassadors wherever they found themselves. Oh! my goodness, how I wish I witnessed that epoch.
Whenever I woke-up every blessed morning, the first thing that comes to my mind is whether this is the same country where our past leaders lived. Were they also Nigerians by birth? This is because what is reflecting now is quite different from what we’re anticipating from our present leaders.
We were told that a leader, regardless of the level of his power, should be kind to his people, that he should treat everyone equally without discrimination. Sadly, the kind of leaders we’ve are not up to the task. I don’t know where the problem lies.
Nowadays, it seems like we’re having leaders, especially political leaders, with no quality of leadership. We have leaders that are always promoting religious bigotry, intolerance, violence, among others.
If things continue this way, Nigeria’s future might even be worse than it is presently. To buttress my assertion, let me briefly highlight some instances that are common to us.
Back then, there was nothing like buying an offer of employment, no terrorism in the country, nothing like segregation, almost every sector was doing well, citizens were given free education, free meals, almost every basic need was affordable. But now, all the aforementioned are very difficult and unaffordable by majority of the people.
This could be an indication that those that are going to witness tomorrow will definitely suffer more than people of this generation. If education is becoming too expensive and unaffordable for the common man and social amenities are non-existent, then imagine what would happen in some years to come.
May Allah restore our nation’s lost glory, amin.
God Bless Nigeria and Nigerians, amin.
