SEC Considering Making Major Change in Aftermath of NFL Player Fiasco

Players leaving the NFL to return to college football has been one of the most talked-about stories in sports in recent months.

After the NCAA passed a rule in June giving athletes five seasons to play, players who started in 2022 were left out and went to court. Some of those players, including former Ole Miss stars Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, had already spent the summer with NFL teams and wanted back in. Wright was even waived by the Browns so he could return to college.

Lane Kiffin tried to bring them both to LSU, but the SEC, which had banned former pros, pushed back. It sued the school and even scheduled a meeting to consider expelling them from the conference altogether. A Louisiana judge sided with the players, though, and blocked the SEC from punishing LSU.

Now, with the sport still dealing with the fallout, ESPN's Pete Thamel reports that SEC officials are discussing a league-wide player contract template, with some terms standardized and others customized by school.

College football increasingly runs on NIL and revenue-sharing deals, and the recent eligibility lawsuits showed how messy things can get. For the SEC, this new change could mean more control and fewer legal fights. And for schools, a shared baseline would make contracts easier to enforce and cut down on disputes, while the custom parts would still let them compete for talent. As for players, it could bring clearer protections, but it could also limit how much they can negotiate.

Ultimately, there are a few ways this could go. Other conferences might follow suit, which would push the sport toward pro-style contracts. Player attorneys or the NCAA could also challenge it, especially if it looks like the league is limiting what players can earn or where they can go. The situation is still very fluid, so details could change quickly.
