Viewers tuning in to the Edmonton Oilers and Minnesota Wild match on Tuesday, October 20, were subjected to some offensive language during a particularly wild hot mic moment.
With 11:34 left in the second period, someone on the Wild+ broadcast made a derogatory remark about goalies.
“Every goalie’s [slur],” a man’s voice said in footage shared widely on social media. “Insane hot mic,” one viewer captioned the clip on X, which has now been viewed almost 2 million times.
It’s unclear who made the remark, which only appears to have aired on the Wild’s broadcast of the game.
The Oilers broadcast, meanwhile, is available on Hulu and includes live analysis from play-by-play announcer Anthony LaPanta and color commentator Ryan Carter — neither of whom appeared to have made the slur or even heard it. This is the version which aired on Canada’s Sportsnet, per Bring Me The Sports, and the insult wasn’t audible during the live broadcast either.
Fans on social media have suggested the comment was actually made by a fan in the stands, as others could be heard laughing about it as well.
“People saying its the minnesota broadcast team are insane that is very obviously not their voices and there are people laughing its the crowd,” wrote one viewer on X.
On Threads, another fan wrote, “Idk who said it. It wasn’t the ref making the call and it didn’t sound like LaPanta or Carter either.”
Another agreed, adding, “i know our guys voices 😭 like cmon it’s obviously the audience.”
Others simply reacted with shock that the offensive word made it onto live television.
“Heard this live but then 2nd guessed myself. Didnt think there was any way that was what I heard,” read one comment.
On Threads, another added, “Yeah we heard that too…didn’t know people still use that word in that manner. Embarrassing. The giggles also were gross.”
