Kathmandu, October 22
Meteorologists have indicated that rain is likely in many parts of Nepal from next week. The chance of rain stems from the influence of a low-pressure system that has developed in the Bay of Bengal.
According to meteorologist Dr Binod Pokhrel, various weather forecast models show that rain could fall for about a week starting next Tuesday.
Sharing the average forecast chart of four weather models on Facebook, he said there are signs of heavy rain in some places.
He said the models give differing estimates of where the rain will fall and how much. It is therefore difficult at this point to say exactly how much rain will fall in which place. As the forecast may change in the coming days, he said people should keep an eye on the latest updates.
Advice to harvest paddy early
Given the likelihood of rain, he has advised farmers preparing to harvest paddy to plan according to the weather forecast.
Farmers who had planned to start harvesting from next Tuesday should, if possible, cut and safely store the paddy before then, or prepare to harvest only after the rain stops, he said.
The meteorologist also said farmers should be extra cautious, as hailstorms may accompany the rain in some places.
Similarly, as adverse weather in the Himalayan region could raise risks, those heading out on journeys or treks have been urged to take special care. Those preparing to travel or trek have been advised to plan based on regular weather forecasts and official information.
Because the forecast may still change, farmers, travellers and residents of the concerned areas need to follow the latest weather updates to protect themselves from the possible effects of the rain.
