Bella left to navigate months of school away from mum
Bella Myers, a second grader at her local elementary school, was summoned to the front office without any explanation.
Waiting for her there was a gift box. Inside it sat a golden genie lamp, a carefully chosen nod to the Disney film Aladdin, which Bella and her mother love to watch together.
Her mother, Kiana Quiroz, is a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force and had been posted overseas since March, leaving Bella to navigate months of school, milestones, and growing up without her around.
Bella opens up about missing mum
When Bella picked up the lamp, she knew exactly what to do. "I miss my mum really, really much," she said.
"I say what I really, really want. It'll give me the wish." With that, she squeezed her eyes shut and made her wish.
Moments later, the door opened.
Quiroz surprised to see her daughter Bella
"From the moment she opened the door, I was so surprised," Staff Sergeant Quiroz said of the reunion.
She had only been told she would be coming home two weeks before the visit. Seeing her daughter again after so many months brought an immediate rush of emotion.
"Seeing how she had grown so much, how she's missing two front teeth — it all just came like flooding and rushing back," she said.
Quiroz returns home for a few days
The homecoming was brief. Quiroz was only home for a few days, making the hug all the more precious for both of them.
Yet even in that short time, the bond between mother and daughter was clear.
Bella, reflecting on everything her mother does, offered words that stopped Quiroz in her tracks.
Bella's sweet words to her mum
"All the work for her that she needed to do for me — she gave it me. And if I have a daughter, I'll pass it on to her," the little girl said.
For Quiroz, hearing that was everything.
"It's very reassuring to hear, you know, the impact that you have on your child. She wants to do the same," she said.
