Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help complete principal photography on "The Batman Part II" while director Matt Reeves takes a temporary break to deal with an ongoing family matter, reports Variety.
Soderbergh approached Reeves, offering to help complete the final weeks of filming, with the full support of DC Studios, according to a statement from a studio representative.
"Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt's vision of the film," the representative said.
Soderbergh said he admired Reeves' work on "The Batman," which was released in March 2022, describing it as "intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent."
He said his goal was to work with Reeves and the production team to shoot footage that would integrate seamlessly with the material already filmed, allowing Reeves to complete the movie as intended.
Reeves clarified on X that he would remain involved in post-production but would not be on set as principal photography wraps up.
Warner Bros and DC Studios had announced a temporary production pause in early October, saying Reeves had stepped away to attend to a family matter.
The studio said Reeves had its full support and expressed confidence that work on the project would resume soon. Soderbergh is known for directing films including "Traffic," "Erin Brockovich," "Sex, Lies, and Videotape," and "Ocean's Eleven." His recent releases include "The Christophers," "Black Bag," "Presence," and "John Lennon: The Last Interview."
The highly anticipated Batman sequel has faced several delays since it was announced at CinemaCon in 2022. Originally scheduled for release on 2 October 2026, the film was later pushed back to 1 October 2027 before being rescheduled again in June for February 2028.
Robert Pattinson will return as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. The cast also includes Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, and Jeffrey Wright.
