Nigerian professional boxer and 2023 GOTV Best Boxer winner Bolatito Oluwole, popularly known as Black Tito, talks about her boxing journey, her titles, how she handles fear and sacrifice, the challenges facing female boxers in the country, and her ultimate global ambitions in this interview with Muthmainah Ishola
For people who are just getting to know you, how would you introduce yourself?
My name is Bolatito Oluwole, popularly known as Black Tito. I’m a Nigerian professional boxer, a fighter.
How did your boxing journey begin?
My journey in boxing is funny. My friend was once a boxer, and I followed her to her training back then. After watching her, I told her I wanted to start boxing too.
What inspired the name, Black Tito?
As I said, my name is Bolatito, and I am dark-skinned. Black Tito represents my identity.
What has been your proudest moment as a boxer?
One of my proudest moments is seeing how far I’ve come in this journey. Every fight, every victory, and every challenge has helped shape me into the boxer I am today. I’m proud that I’ve continued to push forward even when things haven’t been easy. For me, the journey itself is something worth celebrating.
How did it feel winning your first major title?
Winning a major title is a special feeling for me because of the hard work, sacrifices, and discipline that went into getting there. It reminds me that the difficult days are not wasted.
What’s the toughest fight you’ve ever had?
For me, I don’t think I’ve had any tough fights so far. Maybe between Claressa Shields and me; of course it will be a tough fight for me, but I am ready for whatever comes.
Have you ever been scared before stepping into the ring?
Of course! I’m human. Being a boxer doesn’t mean you never feel fear. The difference is that I don’t allow fear to control me. I prepare, trust my training, and step into the ring ready to do my job.
What’s the biggest sacrifice you’ve made for boxing?
There are days when I am tired, but I still have to train and stay disciplined. I’ve had to make difficult choices because I know what I want to achieve, and I’m willing to work for it.
Do you think female boxers get enough recognition in Nigeria?
Female boxers don’t get enough recognition in Nigeria. I believe female boxers deserve much more recognition and support in Nigeria. There are talented women putting in the work, making sacrifices, and representing the country, but we still need more sponsorship, media coverage, better opportunities, and investment in women’s boxing. Talent is everywhere, but talent also needs support to grow. I want to be part of the generation that changes that.
Have you ever been underestimated because you’re a woman?
Yes, I believe women in boxing can be underestimated simply because boxing is often seen as a man’s sport. But I don’t see that as a limitation. I see it as an opportunity to prove that skill, strength, discipline, and determination are not limited by gender. I don’t need to argue with anybody.
Outside the ring, are you as tough as people think?
Outside the ring, I am a sweet girl. I can be playful, caring, and soft. Boxing is my profession, but it doesn’t mean I have to be serious every second of the day. I know when to be the fighter, and I also know when to relax and enjoy myself.
Could you date someone who feels intimidated by your boxing career?
I can date someone who respects me and supports my dreams. My career shouldn’t make someone feel threatened because I’m a woman pursuing her passion. I need a partner who is confident, understanding, and proud of what I do.
I don’t expect someone to be a boxer, but I expect them to respect the discipline and commitment my career requires.
Have you ever wanted to punch someone outside the ring?
Of course, yes! There are moments when people can test your patience! But being a boxer also teaches you discipline and control.
If a celebrity challenged you to a boxing match for a huge prize, would you accept?
Why not? (laughs) If the offer is serious, the rules are clear, and everything is properly organised with the right safety measures, I’m open to a good challenge. But remember, I’m a professional boxer, so don’t just look at the prize money and forget who you’re stepping into the ring with! Black Tito will come prepared.
What’s the biggest goal you still want to achieve in your boxing career?
My biggest goal is to compete at the highest level internationally, win major world titles, and put Nigeria on the global boxing map.
What should the world expect next from Black Tito?
The world should expect more growth, more opportunities, bigger fights, and a stronger Black Tito. I’m focused on taking my career to the next level, connecting with the right promoters and partners, and showing what Nigerian female boxing talent can achieve. My journey is still going, and I believe the best chapters are yet to come. This is just the beginning.
