Social Security Administration will announce the 2027 cost of living adjustment on Wednesday, October 14. This will give millions of Americans a clearer picture of how their monthly benefits could change next year.
The Senior Citizens League has projected a 3.5% increase for 2027, however, the figure remains an estimate until the Social Security Administration (SSA) confirms official adjustment after the release of September inflation data.
The 2026 COLA was 2.8%. While the increase for 2025 was 2.5%. The 2027 adjustment will affect eligible Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
Here are six key points Americans should know:
1. Social Security COLA 2027 Announcement on October 14
The 2027 COLA announcement is scheduled for October 14 following the release of September inflation figures by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The adjustment matters to retirees, people receiving disability benefits and also other eligible beneficiaries because it determines how their payments will change in response to inflation.
The SSA has not confirmed the 2027 percentage in the official information available for this report. Beneficiaries should therefore treat forecasts as estimates rather than guaranteed increases.
2. Social Security COLA 2027 Could Reach 3.5%
The Senior Citizens League projected a 3.5% COLA for 2027 in its September 11 forecast. If confirmed, the increase would be 0.7 percentage points higher than the 2.8% adjustment for 2026.
The projection is not the official rate. The final adjustment depends on the inflation figures used in the SSA's calculation.

For illustration, a 3.5% increase would add $70 to a monthly benefit of $2,000, raising it to $2,070 before deductions. The actual increase will depend on the official COLA and each recipient's benefit amount.
3. How Social Security COLA Is Calculated
The SSA calculates the annual COLA using:Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.
The agency compares the average CPI-W for July, August and September with the average for the same three months in the last year a COLA was determined. The percentage increase in the index determines the adjustment.
September's inflation figures are important because they complete the third-quarter data needed to calculate the 2027 COLA.

The formula is intended to help Social Security and SSI benefits keep pace with inflation. If the relevant index does not increase, the formula does not provide a COLA.
4. When Will Higher Social Security Payments Begin in 2027
Social Security's annual COLA generally takes effect with benefits payable in December. Which recipients receive in January. So eligible beneficiaries are expected to receive their adjusted Social Security payments in January 2027.
SSI follows a different payment schedule, with annual COLA increases generally reflected in the payment issued at the end of December before the new year. The exact payment date should be checked against the SSA's official schedule.
Beneficiaries should wait for the official announcement and their individual benefit notices to confirm their updated amounts.
5. Why the Increase Will Differ From One Beneficiary to Another
The COLA is a percentage adjustment. So the dollar increase depends on the benefit a person currently receives.
So for example, if the final COLA is 3.5%. Then a monthly benefit of $1500 would increase by $52.50. While a $2000 benefit would increase by $70. These are illustrative calculations based on the forecast, not confirmed payment amounts.
The amount beneficiaries actually receive may also be affected by deductions which include Medicare Part B premiums for people whose premiums are withheld from Social Security payments.
6. What Beneficiaries Should Do After COLA Announcement
Once the SSA confirms the 2027 adjustment, beneficiaries can use the official percentage to estimate their new monthly benefits.
Recipients should review their COLA notices and check their 'my Social Security' accounts when individual benefit information becomes available. Those who receive SSI should also consult the SSA's official guidance on their payment amounts and schedule.
It is important to distinguish the headline COLA from the amount that reaches a beneficiary's bank account. Medicare premiums and other applicable deductions may affect the net payment.
