Scherrer and his brother have transformed 600 square metres of their expansive 1,500-square-metre garden into themed attractions.
For most people, a summer escape means booking a flight, packing a suitcase and leaving home behind. For Michael Scherrer, the holiday destination is considerably closer. In his garden in Switzerland, the 48-year-old content creator has spent a year transforming a modest patch of land into a miniature Greek village, complete with cobbled lanes, blue shutters and a traditional-style bar.
Built with the help of his brother Samuel, 46, the project turns the idea of a backyard makeover into something closer to a private theme park. Scroll down to read the details.
A Greek escape at home
According to a Daily Mail report, the Greek village occupies a 15-by-15-metre section of the garden and cost around £10,000 to create. Its design is intended to evoke the character of a Mediterranean holiday, with winding stone pathways, tiny buildings, vivid blue details and carefully designed spaces that encourage visitors to linger. At the centre of the experience is a small bar, positioned so that guests can sit surrounded by the village rather than simply looking at it from the outside. The effect is deliberately immersive, creating the sensation of stepping into another country without leaving the property, adds the online report. On the other hand, PEOPLE reported that Scherrer built the village as a place where he and his clients could sit and talk, but the project quickly became much more ambitious.
Planning permissions and unpredictable weather in Switzerland extended the construction process, turning what began as a gardening and building project into a substantial long-term undertaking.
From garden to theme park
The Greek village is only one part of a much larger attraction. Scherrer and his brother have around 1,500 square metres available for their creative projects and have so far developed approximately 600 square metres. The wider garden has already taken on the character of a miniature theme park, with spaces inspired by different countries, ideas and seasons. Alongside the Greek setting is a Japanese garden, while an Irish bar and Halloween-themed areas add contrasting moods to the landscape, adds the Daily Mail report. The project has cost approximately £20,000 overall, with each section designed to offer a different visual experience.
Rather than following one consistent aesthetic, the brothers have embraced the garden as a constantly evolving collection of themed environments, adds the report.
A backdrop for unexpected holidays
The miniature village has also become an unlikely social-media prop. Its convincing details have allowed friends and family to take photographs that appear, at first glance, to have been taken abroad. The Daily Mail reported on the unusual backyard transformation, highlighting how visitors have used the setting to fool friends and colleagues into believing they have actually travelled to Greece.
The illusion works precisely because of the attention paid to details such as the architecture, colour palette and layout of the tiny village. For Scherrer, however, the appeal goes beyond photographs. The garden provides a physical escape during the summer, creating a space where ordinary evenings can take on the atmosphere of a Mediterranean getaway.
The next chapter
As per PEOPLE, the village is not necessarily finished. Scherrer has considered turning one of the tiny homes into a guest room, potentially adding a bed during spring so visitors could stay within the miniature setting. There are also plans for new themed areas, including a fishing village and another room for guests. The garden is still evolving, with a pirate ship among the possibilities.Small world gardens that tell stories and grow plants are popular. What began with two brothers wanting to garden and build has evolved into an imaginative landscape where Greece, Japan, Ireland and seasonal fantasy can coexist within a single Swiss backyard.Images Courtesy: Instagram/smallest_themepark
