Often criticized for his many mistakes throughout his career, 40-year-old Muslera secured a "Maracanazo" of his own.
He saved THREE Flamengo penalties on Thursday night (22).
And sent Estudiantes through to the Libertadores final against Palmeiras.
After knocking out Corinthians in Itaquera, the Argentine side did the same to Flamengo at the Maracanã itself, in front of more than 70,000 fans.
Preventing a third final between the Rio club and Palmeiras.
After a goalless draw in Argentina, Estudiantes created big chances, went down to ten men and held on for another 0-0 draw.
Then watched their goalkeeper deny Jorginho, Paquetá and Bruno Henrique to seal a 3-2 shootout win.
Los Pincharratas also prevented Brazilian football from already securing an eighth straight Libertadores title.
Another all-Brazilian final would have seen the country overtake Argentina in tournament titles.
It remains 25 apiece until November 28.
Estudiantes turn up the heat as Rossi takes center stage
The Argentine side came out all guns blazing from the start.
And began controlling proceedings after escaping at least two yellow cards.
Rossi had to come to the rescue twice in the same minute.
He saved Rojo's effort inside the box and then stretched at full length to deny Rodríguez.
Pedro managed to create Flamengo's best chance in the 33rd minute.
But Leonardo Jardim's side went into halftime without testing Muslera—just as in the first leg.
Estudiantes down to 10 men 🟥
Gustavo Tejera drew attention in the first half for being "stingy" with his cards.
But he came back from the break a "different" referee.
And Baltasar Rodríguez, already on a yellow, picked up another five minutes into the second half.
Despite their numerical advantage, Flamengo still struggled to break into the opposition box.
Credit to opponents who stayed compact without the ball. And sat even deeper after losing a player.
Arrascaeta, returning from a fracture, was Flamengo's first change.
Three substitutions at once followed. And a more attacking Flamengo.
And Plata was denied by Muslera with his very first chance.
Flamengo managed to apply some pressure. But could not overcome opponents who defended successfully without the ball.
Muslera makes THE DIFFERENCE
Jorginho had been UNSTOPPABLE from the penalty spot.
But he became the Uruguayan's first victim.
Paquetá was also denied by Muslera.
And Bruno Henrique, who had to score, suffered the same fate.
Estudiantes missed just one—Cetré blazed his over.
And they did not even need to take their final kick.
