Circle’s Gateway product has crossed $10 billion in cumulative transfer volume, a milestone the company announced on October 15, 2026.
That’s a lot of USDC moving around for a product that launched on mainnet around August 2025. Gateway isn’t trying to be flashy. It’s trying to solve one of the most tedious problems in multichain finance, and the volume suggests plenty of businesses had that problem.
The pitch is simple. Instead of parking separate stacks of USDC on every blockchain they use, developers and businesses hold one unified balance. They can then tap that balance across multiple supported chains.
How Gateway got to $10 billion
The growth curve has been steep. According to analytics from Dune, Gateway’s lifetime USDC minting and transfer volume stood at over $4.5 billion in early July 2026.
By late August 2026, the same Dune data showed roughly 744,000 cumulative transfers and $9.09 billion in USDC volume. That means the product roughly doubled its lifetime total over the course of about two summer months.
Then came October 15, and the $10 billion headline figure.
Recent activity reports put Gateway’s daily transaction volumes in the tens of millions, which points to sustained, recurring usage. The customer base includes payment service providers, exchanges, custodians, and wallet services. These are businesses moving money as part of daily operations.
How it actually works
Speed is the headline feature. Once a balance is established, Gateway transfers complete in under 500 milliseconds.
Under the hood, Gateway relies on non-custodial smart contracts for deposits. Users put USDC into contracts that Circle doesn’t take custody of, which matters for institutions wary of handing assets to an intermediary.
Minting is handled through an off-chain attestation system. Put more plainly, Circle signs off on a transfer outside the blockchain, and the destination chain then mints the corresponding USDC. That design is a big part of why the process is so quick.
This is where Gateway breaks from the traditional model. Most cross-chain transfers are point-to-point: send funds from chain A, wait, receive them on chain B. Gateway treats your USDC as one pool that can show up wherever it’s needed.
Supported networks include Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Avalanche, and Polygon PoS, with the list continuing to grow. Circle has also added features like programmatic minting and Fast Deposit options, aimed at companies that want to automate how they move money between chains.
Background: Circle’s cross-chain toolkit
Gateway doesn’t operate alone. Circle’s Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol, known as CCTP, runs alongside it and supports direct transfers of USDC between chains.
The two products serve slightly different needs. CCTP handles moving USDC from one place to another. Gateway is built around the idea of a single balance that never has to be split up in the first place.
The underlying issue both target is liquidity fragmentation. As USDC has spread across more blockchains, businesses have had to pre-fund reserves on each network they touch. Every dollar sitting idle on one chain is a dollar that can’t be deployed on another.
