A socio political group, Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD), has dismissed threats attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the Anambra state governor, Chukwuma Soludo, insisting that their threats would not diminish the prospects of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mr Peter Obi.
National Chairman of the IAD, Chief Chekwas Okorie, who stated this at a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, said it would be a major distraction to respond to the threats of Soludo and Wike, reminding Soludo that both he and Obi were the products of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
“We have decided that it would be a major distraction to respond to Soludo’s threats against Obi. We have reminded him that both of them are of the products APGA.”
“But let us remind them that the people of Osun proved that they could have a governor of their choice. “Despite this, the Osun governor quickly said he would support Tinubu his brother from his state.
“Soludo should be mindful of his remaining three and half years. Let us see how he would be able to get 10 percent votes from Anambra. The same response I give to Soludo is what I give to Wike,” he said.
The IAD which formally endorsed Obi as its preferred candidate for the January 16, 2027 presidential election, said the group arrived at the decision after an appraisal of the leading presidential candidates.
He said the group, after extensive consultations with Igbo unions, market associations, women’s organisations, youth groups and civil society organisations in Nigeria and the diaspora, unanimously resolved to support Obi.
According to him, the decision to endorse Obi was informed by the need for Nigeria to elect a compassionate, prudent and incorruptible leader capable of addressing the country’s challenges.
“We came to the unanimous resolution that it will be in the best interest of Nigeria to elect Mr Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC) as the President of Nigeria come January 16, 2027. We are encouraged by the fact that Mr Peter Obi has earned the popular support of the majority of Nigerians across all ethnic and religious divides in the country.”
The IAD chairman expressed confidence that Obi would enjoy substantial support beyond the South-East, particularly among Nigerians living in Lagos, Abuja and other parts of the country.
Okorie specifically predicted a significant increase in Obi’s votes in Lagos, where millions of Nigerians from different ethnic backgrounds reside.
“Igbo people that will vote in Lagos in 2027 will be double the number that voted in 2023,” he declared.
He explained that the IAD was building on an extensive network of Igbo associations and community groups across the country to mobilise voters through direct engagement rather than relying on political rallies.
According to him, the organisation believed that personal contact with voters and sustained grassroots mobilisation would be more effective in securing electoral support.
He described the 2027 election as an opportunity for Nigerians to elect a leader who could address the country’s economic and governance challenges.
The group also endorsed Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano state, as Obi’s running mate, describing him as a compassionate and people-oriented politician.
