Murang'a governor Irungu Kang'ata has addressed his political journey, comparing his former coalition Linda Mwananchi, to the AFC Leopards in a pointed jab at the alliance's identity.

AFC Leopards is a football team associated with the Luhya community, suggesting that Linda Mwananchi also belongs to a particular community.
Kang'ata confirmed that he had since joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), describing his earlier role in the broader opposition discussions as that of a mediator, drawing a likeness to former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Speaking at AIPCA Nyahururu Cathedral on Sunday, October 25, he expressed confidence that the opposition leaders led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna, and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua would lead the coalition to electoral success.
"I was in a team called Linda Mwananchi. That is AFC Leopards. Today, I have defected and joined DCP na wote wameshikamana. I was like Kofi Annan; my job was to bring the two sides together," he said.
The governor had previously announced he would not seek re-election on a United Democratic Alliance ticket before formally joining the Linda Mwananchi movement in June 2026 at Kivulini Grounds in Thika. His latest remarks confirm he has since moved to DCP.
Kang'ata criticises government over afya.ke shutdown
He also took aim at the national government over what he described as the forced shutdown of his county's hospital management system, accusing senior officials of prioritising private financial gain over patients' lives.

Kang'ata said that the Ministry of Health had ordered the county to decommission its Afya.ke system, a platform he said cost the county nothing to operate, and migrate to the government's new Taifa Care platform, which he claimed cost taxpayers KSh 104 billion to develop.
"The government has spent KSh 104 billion to create another system so that certain private individuals can benefit," he said. "Our system was free, but they switched it off so that we would adopt the other KSh 104 billion system that would enrich a few people."
Kang'ata said the county refused to comply and was subsequently disconnected from the system, leaving hospital operations disrupted. He said neither patients nor children dependent on the platform for treatment were considered before the move was made.
"They did not care whether patients in hospitals would suffer or die. That was not their concern," he said, adding that even courts had issued orders that the government appeared unwilling to respect.
The governor argued that the government should instead direct its technology budget towards hiring in-house computer scientists to build public health systems, rather than awarding costly contracts to private firms.
