KUALA LUMPUR: Cheah Liek Hou-Faris Azri delivered Malaysia's first badminton gold at the Asian Para Games by winning the SU5 men's doubles title in Ichinomiya City today.
The Malaysian pair defeated South Korea's Jeon Sun Woo-Kim Ge Yeon 21-8, 21-13 in their final group match at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium.
The event was played in a four-pair league format.
Liek Hou-Faris completed their campaign undefeated following earlier wins over Taiwan's Fang Jen Yu-Pu Gui Yu and Thailand's Pricha Somsiri-Nattaphon Thaweesap.
It was Liek Hou's third Asian Para Games men's doubles gold, ending a 12-year wait.
His previous victories were with Suhaili Laiman at Guangzhou 2010 and Incheon 2014.
At press time, this was Malaysia's fourth gold of the Games, following titles won by powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin (men's under-72kg), long jumper Abdul Latif Romly (men's T20), and Zuhairie Ahmad Tarmizi (1,000m time trial C4-C5).
Liek Hou, a two-time Paralympic champion, also remained on track for the men's singles gold after beating Faris 21-12, 21-10 in an all-Malaysian quarter-final.
Liek Hou will face China's Li Ming Pan in tomorrow's semi-finals.
