The Federal Government has inaugurated four transmission substations in Kano State, adding 544 megawatts of transmission capacity to strengthen electricity supply to industrial, commercial and residential areas.
The projects, executed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria in partnership with the Kano State Government, cover Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi.
A statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, Adeola Labzy, on Thursday said the new infrastructure would ease pressure on overloaded substations, improve bulk electricity supply and provide capacity to serve previously unmet demand.
At Walalambe, the project provides 80MW of capacity through two 40MVA transformers, with six outgoing feeders serving the Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and neighbouring communities.
The statement read, “The Federal Ministry of Power through Transmission Company of Nigeria, in partnership with the Kano State Government, has commissioned four transmission substations adding 544MW of wheeling capacity to Kano State and the grid. These transmission capacities are at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi.
Walalambe contributes a new 80 MW capacity substation with two 40 MVA transformers; Kumbotso receives 300 MVA at 330kV level and 100 MVA transformers; Dakata and Dan-Agundi each gain an additional 100 MVA transformer, respectively at 132kV level”.
The statement said Lee Group, a major industrial company, had also been reconnected to the national grid after operating off-grid for more than 30 years.
At Kumbotso, the project includes 330kV infrastructure and 100MVA transformers, while Dakata and Dan-Agundi have each received an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132kV level.
The upgrade at Dan-Agundi is particularly significant following a fire that damaged the substation. The restoration has returned substantial capacity to the facility, enabling it to serve Kano’s ancient town, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.
The ministry said the projects would strengthen electricity infrastructure for manufacturers, small businesses and households, with the potential to support employment, commercial activities and improved living conditions.
It described the commissioning as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and his drive to reposition the power sector as a foundation for national development.
