SMU volleyball lost to an unranked opponent for the first time this season on Friday when the Mustangs fell to Miami.
The Mustangs won the first two sets before Miami made a comeback at Moody Coliseum. SMU lost the final three sets in front of its home crowd (25-22, 25-19, 25-22, 33-31, 15-9), after moving back up to No. 5 in the country earlier this week.
The first set was close, but the Mustangs won the second set handedly, staying six and even seven points ahead of the Hurricanes for a large portion of it. Miami never trailed by more than three points for the final three sets. The fourth set went to 33-31 with SMU losing the final two points due to attacking errors from junior middle blocker Favor Anyanwu, and then Miami dominated in the fifth set. The Hurricanes took a quick 5-0 lead before winning the set 15-9.
Sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis led SMU's attack with 21 kills, while Anyanwu led the defense with seven blocks.
Prior to the match on Friday, SMU was undefeated against Miami since joining the ACC in 2024. SMU (13-4, 5-2 in ACC play) has now lost its last two games at home after also losing to Pitt on Sunday. The Mustangs are now two games behind first place, and one game behind 6-1 Pitt and Miami.
