Amid complaints that YouTube comments are basically over, with all bots and barely any humans left, Google has decided to shake up the comment section. Users, however, are split on the introduction of media to the text-only experience.
YouTube comments are about to get a lot noisier, similar to those on Instagram, TikTok, and other comment sections. Google has updated the YouTube Data API v3 revision history with a new field for comment image URLs, confirming that images and GIF animations will be available to all users in November 2026. Until now, the comment section has only handled text and emoji with a limited GIF support rollout on the mobile app from a dedicated library.
The change is part of a wider community update as TV viewers will be able to post comments by voice instead of typing with a remote, and creators will get more personalized comment management tools that are still in testing. Channel memberships are also getting a members-only community for posts and discussions, plus a new membership page for discovering tiers.
As mentioned, the GIF part is not exactly new since YouTube announced it at the Made on YouTube event, and GIFs are meant to come from a dedicated in-app repository and only in the mobile app. Reddit's r/YouTube channel has been flooded with reports of people seeing GIFs under videos, while many others report they cannot post them yet. It is also not a Premium perk, as the staggered release applies to everyone.
As can be expected from the platform, Reddit is not thrilled. One user said it will ruin the YouTube feel, and others fear a repeat of the cluttered TikTok comment section. Some users have gone further and started hunting for workarounds, too. Tips for blocking GIF comments include tools in adblock style or simply skipping app updates. One commenter was relieved to still be on an old version, for instance, while another wanted GIFs restricted to Shorts.
Needless to say, not everyone sees a problem, since Instagram and similar apps already offer GIFs, and users there seem to like the feature, but there is also the practical concern. Written comments that describe a problem or ask for clarification are more useful than an animation on its own, for instance, and many YouTube viewers come to the video platform precisely because of that.
There have been plenty of complaints that YouTube comments are basically over because of all the bots there, with barely any human comments left under some videos. YouTube will probably need to add a toggle to hide GIFs, and the early backlash makes that look likely.
Creators who rely on feedback might want one even more than viewers do, too, as the comments to a video are often very useful to them, too, and visual clutter may not help sift through all of them quickly. It remains to be seen how many YouTube comments will contain actual words come November.
