The Police Service Commission (PSC), in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has commenced a three-day training programme for 100 personnel on human rights-based policing and effective oversight of the Nigeria Police Force.
The training, which began in Abuja on Tuesday, 13 October, will end on Thursday, 15 October 2026.

Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retd.), said the initiative was part of efforts to intensify the fight against human rights abuses and promote responsible, professional policing in Nigeria.
According to a statement by the PSC Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Torty Njoku Kalu, the programme is designed to strengthen participants’ knowledge of international human rights standards and improve the Commission’s oversight of police operations.
The ICRC Police and Security Adviser, Chuks Ngbeken, said the training would equip PSC officials with the knowledge required to protect human rights in line with international standards.
He said participants would also gain insights into relevant legal frameworks and best practices for safeguarding human dignity during police operations, particularly in conflict and humanitarian situations.
Argungu acknowledged the ICRC’s support, commending the organisation for recognising the Commission’s efforts to promote accountability and discipline within the Nigeria Police Force through policies aimed at improving professionalism.
He urged participants to cultivate the habit of reading and deepen their knowledge of relevant laws and legal authorities to strengthen their capacity to discharge their oversight responsibilities effectively.
The PSC chairman assured Nigerians that the Commission would not tolerate human rights abuses under his leadership.
He added that the Commission would continue to exercise its oversight mandate to improve efficiency, accountability and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
