A video clip of Vice-President Jane Ansah urging Malawians to remain vigilant has resurfaced on social media, prompting widespread discussion as President Peter Mutharika remains in South Africa on a private visit.

The clip, in which Dr Ansah says, “When you see smoke, whatever it is, there must be fire,” has been shared extensively online in recent days, with some users seeking to link the remarks to current political developments.
However, the comments were made several months ago during an Anglican Church event held in March, according to information now available to NyasaTimes, raising questions about the context in which the footage is being circulated.
In the video, Ansah encourages vigilance, telling her audience to be alert and prepared for challenges that may arise.
The footage itself does not indicate that she was referring to the President, his health, or any subsequent political developments.
Nonetheless, its renewed circulation has coincided with heightened interest in Mutharika’s continued stay in South Africa, where he travelled on 6 October on what the government has described as a private visit.
The timing has encouraged speculation online, although there is no evidence that the Vice-President’s remarks were connected to events unfolding months later.
The episode highlights the way social media can detach political statements from their original setting, allowing old remarks to acquire new meanings as circumstances change.
In this case, a comment made at a church gathering has found a fresh audience amid contemporary political uncertainty.
Without the wider context of Ansah’s March address, interpretations of the clip are likely to remain varied. What is clear, however, is that the remarks predate both the President’s current trip and the speculation that has surrounded it.
