The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal products manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos state, where three unregistered products were allegedly produced under unhygienic conditions.
The agency also arrested the facility’s manager, identified as Abulaziz Sayidu, while the alleged owner of the operation, Ashietu Adams, was said to have absconded.
Deputy Director in charge of the Pharmaceutical Division, Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, NAFDAC, Edith Joseph, stated this Thursday during an inspection of the facility.
Joseph said the agency launched an investigation after receiving intelligence on October 16 about the production of a herbal product, Ashietu Adams Bitters, allegedly bearing a fake NAFDAC registration number.
She added that surveillance and intelligence gathering led officers to the facility, which was concealed within a residential building in Agege.
She stated that the officers discovered three products: Ashietu Adams Herbal Mixture for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), Ashietu Adams Blood Purifier and another herbal product claimed to be used for high blood pressure.
Joseph said none of the products was registered with NAFDAC, while the registration number displayed on the blood purifier belonged to a different product, identified as a registered cough syrup.
