Shillong, Oct 19: Shillong will host the 5th Karate India Organisation (KIO) North East Zone Karate Championship 2026 from October 22 to 24, marking Meghalaya’s return as host of a major zonal karate tournament after three decades.
The three-day championship will be held at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Convocation Hall and organised by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) under the aegis of KIO, with support from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
The event marks a significant milestone for martial arts in the state, which last hosted a major zonal karate tournament in the mid-1990s.
More than 900 participants, including 899 athletes, coaches, referees and team officials representing all eight North Eastern states, are expected to take part in the championship.
The tournament will provide young karatekas with an important platform to assess their performance and improve their rankings as they prepare for upcoming national and international competitions.

Karatekas from Meghalaya will compete across various age and weight categories, with the home contingent expected to benefit from support from local spectators.
Organisers said hosting a championship of this scale would help strengthen the region’s sporting ecosystem, promote martial arts and inspire young athletes across the North East.
