Media personality and commentator Stephana Sefa Boateng has shared candid views on how financial dynamics impact modern marriages, particularly when a wife outearns her husband.
In her discussion, she explained that women who hold high-ranking or lucrative positions at work must learn to separate their professional authority from their roles at home.
According to her, this requires conscious effort, especially in households where the woman brings home a larger paycheck.
She stressed that a higher income should never be used to diminish a husband's sense of importance, adding that a man’s value in marriage cannot and should not be measured by his bank balance alone. Stephana noted that many men have wives who earn more while still contributing meaningfully to the upkeep of the home.
She believes the critical factor is whether the husband actively provides the family’s basic needs and takes responsibility for leading the household.
She also pointed out that, within the context of Ghanaian societal expectations, a man’s financial contribution is frequently tied to his authority and respect in the home. In her view, if a wife is traditionally expected to submit to her husband, the man should equally be willing to shoulder a major share of the family's financial responsibilities.
Addressing scenarios involving unemployment, Stephana advised that a woman who knowingly chooses to marry an unemployed partner should fully understand the reality before making that commitment.
However, if a husband loses his job *after* marriage, she believes both partners must collaborate to weather the storm. She noted that some men possess immense potential and capability but simply lack the right opportunities at a given moment.
At the same time, she cautioned that if a woman carries the bulk of the family’s financial burden for too long without open communication, resentment and marital strain are bound to follow.
Ultimately, Stephana emphasized that a successful marriage relies on teamwork, mutual respect, and an unwavering willingness to support one another through financial highs and lows, regardless of who writes the bigger paycheck.
