The Buganda Katikkiro says reading is essential to children’s literacy and writing skills, as education leaders at the 14th Enjuba National Spelling Bee call for greater emphasis on indigenous languages in early learning.
The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged parents to prioritise reading among children, saying it is essential to developing literacy and effective writing skills.
Mayiga delivered the message through the Kingdom’s Minister of Education, Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, during the 14th edition of the Enjuba National Spelling Bee 2026, held at Serena Hotel in Kampala.
“Reading is the foundation of learning and writing,” Mayiga said.
Meanwhile, Dr Saphinah Mutumba, a commissioner in the Ministry of Education, called for greater emphasis on indigenous languages in teaching, particularly during the early stages of a child’s education.
Mutumba said using children’s native languages could support learning and strengthen their language development.
The event brought together education leaders to highlight the importance of reading, spelling skills and language development among learners as part of efforts to improve educational outcomes.
