The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) said the officers were apprehended along the Maua–Makutano Road near Kemu following surveillance targeting suspected bribery and corruption.
The suspects were identified as Senior Sergeant Robert Kibet Busienei and Police Constable Janet Rose Makena.
According to the commission, officers recovered KSh 23,000 in various denominations from the two suspects during the operation.
Investigators also impounded a Toyota Fielder, registration number KDC 873T, which was parked beside the road at the time of the operation.
EACC takes suspects to Isiolo office
Following their arrest, the two officers were escorted to the EACC Upper Eastern Regional Office in Isiolo, where they were taken through processing and statement recording.
The arrests form part of the commission’s efforts to address allegations of bribery involving public officers, particularly those entrusted with enforcing traffic regulations.
Traffic officers are responsible for ensuring road safety and enforcing transport laws, but allegations of soliciting money from motorists have repeatedly raised concerns about accountability and integrity within law enforcement.
EACC reiterated its commitment to combating corruption and ensuring public officers uphold the required standards of integrity and accountability while discharging their duties.
How Gen Z confronted traffic police
In a related development, a Kenyan Gen Z recently went viral after confronting two traffic police officers he accused of soliciting bribes from motorists after stopping a matatu.
He urged the driver not to surrender any money, sparking a heated exchange in which one officer challenged him to leave. The young man said his fight against roadside corruption was personal, claiming his uncle died in an accident involving an overloaded vehicle whose driver had allegedly bribed officers to be allowed to proceed.
As tensions escalated, one officer chased after him as he continued filming and called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate alleged bribery within the traffic police department.
