Sony has officially announced a Midnight Black version of the PS5 Digital Edition, giving its latest console a darker look. However, there’s a catch for anyone hoping to get their hands on one outside Japan.
According to an announcement on the official PlayStation Blog, the new Midnight Black PS5 will launch on November 19, alongside a matching black disc drive for players who want to add physical game support.
The new colour gives the PS5 a ridiculously sleek black finish, replacing the standard white panels that have been part of the console’s design since launch with the new hue. It’s a simple change yes, but one that looks much better – in our opinion anyway,
Of course, there’s a but…
Unfortunately, the new console is currently exclusive to Japan. Boo. And it’s not quite the same PS5 Digital Edition sold elsewhere, so it won’t be a case of just importing one and being done with it.
Sony is using its Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition, which launched in November 2025 at a reduced price of around $350. The lower price comes with regional restrictions – the console can only be used with a PlayStation account set to Japan, for example, while the system language is limited to Japanese.
It’s part of Sony’s wider effort to strengthen PlayStation’s position in Japan, where Nintendo’s Switch consoles have remained hugely popular.
For now, Sony hasn’t confirmed whether the Midnight Black PS5 will receive a wider international release. There is an alternative, though. Sony already sells Midnight Black console covers for $54 in the US and £45 in the UK, allowing existing PS5 owners to achieve a similar look without buying another console.
Still, a factory-finished black PS5 would be a welcome addition to the lineup, especially for anyone who has been waiting for Sony to offer something beyond the standard white design.
