The Al Sadu Handicrafts Association has unveiled “A Thread in Orbit,” a crochet art installation at Al Shaheed Park, bringing traditional Kuwaiti craftsmanship into a contemporary public space as part of the park’s third phase.
The project involved 13 Kuwaiti members of the association’s “Thread” crochet group. Through the installation, the participants celebrate the country’s handicraft traditions while presenting them through a modern artistic approach. Association Chairperson Sheikha Bibi Al-Sabah said the work demonstrates how Kuwaiti craft heritage can evolve alongside contemporary art by combining manual skill, creative vision and teamwork.
She expressed pride in the participating craftswomen, saying the project reflects their ability to draw inspiration from Kuwait’s cultural memory and transform it into creative work that connects with the public. The installation also supports the association’s mission to preserve traditional Kuwaiti crafts, pass them on to future generations and provide craftswomen with opportunities to showcase their talents in the country’s cultural and artistic scene.
Inspired by Kuwait’s maritime heritage, the artwork draws on the traditional dayeen — a net basket used by divers to collect oysters during pearl-diving trips. Its structure, built around rings, knots and interwoven patterns, has been reinterpreted through crochet in a contemporary form.
The installation features crocheted circles of different colours and shapes arranged in a suspended composition. Their interaction with light, shadow and surrounding space creates a visual expression of collective creativity, linking Kuwait’s pearl-diving past with modern artistic expression.
Sheikha Bibi welcomed the opportunity to display the work at Al Shaheed Park, saying public installations help introduce visitors to the value of traditional handicrafts and highlight their continuing place in Kuwait’s national identity.
