Two alleged members of a Maoist squad, Malti and Mangal, have surrendered to Kolkata Police, police commissioner Ajay Nand announced at Lalbazar on Friday.
Jharkhand Police had announced a ₹5 lakh bounty on Mangal’s head, Nand said.
Mangal surrendered an AK-47 rifle, while his wife, Malti, a resident of Gopiballavpur in Jhargram district, surrendered an INSAS rifle, police said.
Mangal is said to have been close to slain Maoist leader Kishenji and served as the bodyguard of Maoist leader Akash.
According to Nand, the couple moved to the Dalma forest region of Jharkhand around 2011-12. Malti had worked with a squad led by Ranjan Munda, he said.
Several members of the Ranjan Munda squad have been arrested or surrendered in recent months, police sources said. Malti and Mangal are among those who have now surrendered to Kolkata Police.
Jharkhand Police had announced a reward of ₹2 lakh for Malti.
According to police sources, Mangal faces six to seven cases registered in Bengal and Jharkhand, while Malti has no pending cases.
The surrenders come amid a series of arrests and surrenders involving Maoist squads operating in the Bengal-Jharkhand forest belt.
The police are examining the duo’s activities, links with other squad members and the circumstances that led them to surrender.
The latest surrender follows that of Madhai Patra, a CPI (Maoist) zonal committee member from Jangipara in Hooghly, who surrendered to Kolkata Police in May.
Nand had described Patra as a prominent Maoist leader who was arrested in Bengal in 2007 before fleeing to Jharkhand.
Patra had told reporters that his ideology had changed over the years and that he wanted to return to the mainstream.
He also appealed to other Maoist cadres to lay down their arms, saying much had changed in the outside world.
Nand announced that Patra would be covered under the state government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy.
Mangal and Malti would also be covered under the scheme, he said on Friday.
