Tyrone Dobbs’ (Alan Halsall) may be a little stuck in his ways. But compared to his toxic dad, he’s the wokest man in Coronation Street.
Not that Tyrone knows it. His long-lost dad Ross Wilkes (Ian Burfield) reappeared in his life thanks to a family reunion arranged by his daughters, Hope Stape (Isabella Flanagan) and Ruby Dobbs (Billie Naylor). Ever since then, he’s been dying to make up for lost time with his dad.
As a former soldier in the army, Ross is someone that Tyrone truly respects. Unfortunately, he doesn’t see his dad’s dark side.
The truth is, Ross slept with Tyrone’s mother Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) when she was underage for money, exploiting her homelessness and heroin addiction. Needless to say, Cassie was desperate to get rid of Ross.
This backfired massively when she spiked his smoothie so he’d fail his drug test and lose his job at the prison. But Ross was one step ahead, tricking his girlfriend Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) into drinking the spiked smoothie.
This resulted in Tyrone cutting off his mum for good, causing poor Cassie to leave the Street with a broken heart. Or possibly a box, seeing as the last time we saw a terrified Cassie she was in Ross’s car as he sped off into distance.
With Cassie possibly dead, maybe Ross being a raging sexist is the least ofour worries. He could be a killer.
Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) certainly has her suspicions. She already discovered found Cassie’s treasured family photograph in Ross’s wallet, something that she would never leave behind in a million years. However, Ross was able to give a plausible explanation that Tyrone totally bought. Fiz was less convinced, but didn’t have enough evidence to risk a conflict between her bloke and his dad.
But she’s about to get all the evidence she needs that Ross is a knuckle-dragging sexist wrong’un.
After Ross persuades Tyrone to force poor Dorin (Henry Nye Meller) to start boxing, Ruby is the one who ends up being interested in the art of pugilism. However, Ross is disapproving. No doubt under his dad’s influence, Tyrone explains that it’s not for girls and he wouldn’t want her to get hurt. Fiz isn’t going to be happy about this…
Quite rightly, Hope calls her dad out for sexism until Ty backs down and agrees she can go. Why do we get the feeling Ross won’t take this lying down?
Sure enough, Tyrone is drinking with Ross in the Rovers’ when Fiz texts asking for some popcorn for their film night. Ross tells him to ignore it, pockets the phone and twists his son’s arm into having another pint.
This does not go down well with Fiz when Tyrone returns home clearly drunk. Annoyed, she packs him off to bed.
But when a hungover Tyrone reveals that Ross confiscated his phone, Fiz is fuming and wastes no time confronting Ross.
Furious, Fiz accuses Rossof sabotaging the family film night on purpose.
Will Ross be apologetic?
