Switzerland takes a new step in accessing cryptocurrency investments. On October 20, 2026, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) approved the country’s first exchange-traded fund (ETF) aimed at individuals and investing directly in bitcoin. This decision responds to growing interest in digital assets. However, the regulator announced no launch date, leaving several questions open about the availability of this new financial product.

In brief
- FINMA approves the first Swiss ETF investing directly in bitcoin and accessible to individuals.
- The regulator notes growing interest in cryptocurrency investments.
- Several providers have filed or announced similar requests to the Swiss authority.
- No launch date has been announced, while risks related to volatility remain significant.
FINMA Approves Its First ETF Aimed at Individuals
This authorization marks a regulatory breakthrough for the Swiss cryptocurrencies market. The new fund allows individual investors to access direct exposure to bitcoin through an exchange-traded product. Until now, FINMA had notably authorized crypto funds aimed at qualified investors, with specific conditions.
In its announcement, the financial authority highlights the growing interest in digital asset investments. Several fund providers have already filed or announced similar requests. However, FINMA has not disclosed the identity of the issuer of the approved product. It also did not specify when investors will be able to start accessing it.
This decision comes in a market where financial products backed by cryptocurrencies are gaining visibility. In August 2025, SIX Swiss Exchange had announced the trading of an iShares product linked to bitcoin. This product uses BTC that Coinbase Custody International Limited holds offline. However, this announcement concerned a separate product and does not clarify the terms of the newly approved ETF.
Expanded Access to Bitcoin, Despite Market Risks
Switzerland had already made a first move in 2021. That year, FINMA had authorized a crypto fund aimed at qualified investors that mainly invested in a basket of cryptocurrencies. The regulator had then granted an exemption from the usual risk diversification rules. It notably emphasized bitcoin’s trading history and its high trading volume compared to other digital assets.
Despite this opening, the authority reminds that cryptocurrency investments carry significant risks. The high market volatility can lead to a considerable loss of invested capital. The approval of an ETF therefore does not eliminate bitcoin’s price fluctuations. Individuals should consider these risks before choosing this type of investment.
This development fits within a relatively open Swiss policy on digital assets. In 2023, Lugano authorized the payment of all its municipal taxes in bitcoin and Tether USDt (USDT). This initiative placed the city among the first municipal administrations in the world to adopt this option.
Now, attention is turning to the next steps of the ETF launch. The identity of its issuer, its market release date, and its access conditions remain unknown. If marketed, this product could expand regulated bitcoin investment options for Swiss individuals. Its adoption will depend, however, on its access conditions and the evolution of demand.
