MORE than 100 public relations and communications professionals attended a media discussion featuring The Sun Malaysia’s acting managing editor Himanshu Bhatt, focusing on editorial priorities, audience interests and strategies for securing mainstream media coverage.
Organised by Telum Media on Oct 14, the in-person session also featured Irene Tan, The Sun Malaysia’s general manager of advertising and marketing, and was moderated by Telum Media’s Mary-Jane Tan.

Irene encouraged communications professionals to move beyond hard-sell approaches when pitching stories, urging them to provide relevant knowledge, timely insights and useful information that reflect current trends and broader public interests.
The session also examined how communicators could develop stronger story angles to improve their chances of gaining mainstream media coverage.
Among the approaches discussed were demonstrating how a story directly affects consumers, addressing wider industry issues and proposing solutions to societal challenges.
During the question-and-answer session, participants from various sectors raised concerns and sought editorial advice on story pitching and navigating the current media landscape.
The discussion provided an opportunity for communications professionals to gain a better understanding of newsroom priorities and how to develop pitches that are relevant to readers.
