It’s been a long time since Indiana men’s basketball was especially good at rebounding.
Darian DeVries’ first roster was simply too small in the frontcourt to compete on the glass in the Big Ten, Mike Woodson’s teams were pretty average in that area despite strong size from their bigs and Tom Crean… well, it’s been a decade now.
But DeVries’ second team looks the part of one of the top rebounding units in the Big Ten, and the country, this season. He’s stressed that to the team in practice, rebounding becoming their identity, and it’s already shown in exhibition play against Butler and UNC, two high-major opponents. Starting two 7-footers in Samet Yigitoglu and Aiden Sherrell helps, but Jaeden Mustaf has been aggressive in going after the ball out of the backcourt as well.
Rebounding and physicality seem to be the emphasis of exhibition season. So far, it looks elite.
