Summer Howell had never read Carrie when she auditioned for the title character in Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of the Stephen King classic, but that didn’t stop the Manitoba-born actor from beating out more than 1,400 other people for the part. In the Prime Video series, which dropped all eight episodes last week, Howell’s version of Carrie White is a curious but sheltered teenager raised in seclusion by her mother, who sees the outside world as a threat. When her father dies, Carrie starts public school, where she’s humiliated online and begins to realize she has telekinetic powers. Off screen, the 22-year-old’s world is more journals and tarot cards, and less lighting her school on fire with her mind.
