Highlights
Business accounts at Amplify Credit Union that received at least one instant payment grew 25% faster.
Consumer accounts receiving instant payments grew 12% faster than the credit union’s overall portfolio.
Business account growth associated with instant-payment recipients added roughly $1 million in deposits in one quarter.
Banks have generally measured instant payments by transactions: how many customers use them, how much money moves and how quickly payments arrive.
An example from Amplify Credit Union adds another measure: deposit growth.
Business accounts that received at least one instant payment grew 25% faster after Amplify enabled receive-only capabilities on The Clearing House RTP network, according to the October Real-Time Payments Tracker, produced by PYMNTS Intelligence in collaboration with The Clearing House.
The growth added roughly $1 million in deposits over a single quarter.
Consumer accounts that received instant payments also grew faster, expanding 12% more quickly than Amplify’s overall portfolio. For a financial institution, that creates another question to measure: what happens to the account after the payment arrives?
From Payment Volume to Account Value
The Amplify results give banks another way to evaluate the economics of instant payment adoption.
Payment volume measures use of the rail. Deposit growth measures what that use means for the account relationship.
PYMNTS Intelligence found that 76% of surveyed financial institutions enable the RTP network for commercial customers, while 40% offer FedNow to those clients.

Receiving is also a relatively straightforward entry point because customers don’t have to initiate an instant transaction to experience the service. Funds sent to them arrive immediately, giving banks an opportunity to observe whether faster access to incoming money changes how customers use their accounts.
Amplify’s results provide one indication that it does. Consumer accounts receiving instant payments grew faster than the broader portfolio, while business accounts showed an even larger difference.
The business result is particularly notable because deposits are central to the value of a commercial banking relationship. Roughly $1 million in additional deposits over a quarter gives the credit union’s instant payment activity a measurable balance sheet outcome alongside transaction activity.
The example gives banks a metric they can track as instant payments spread: deposit balances and account growth among customers receiving RTP transactions versus customers who don’t.
If similar patterns appear elsewhere, the business case for instant payments expands beyond moving money faster. Banks will have evidence to evaluate whether access to immediate incoming payments is also associated with deeper and more valuable deposit relationships.
Deposit growth was not the only change in account behavior. Members receiving instant payments were three times more likely to use their debit cards, according to The Clearing House. That adds another measure for institutions evaluating receive-only RTP: activity generated after the money reaches the account. Debit use connects incoming payments with subsequent spending through the same financial institution.
For banks and credit unions assessing instant payments, the Amplify experience puts transaction activity alongside deposit growth as a measurable account-level outcome. Both can be tracked against customers who do not receive instant payments to assess differences in account behavior over time.
The infrastructure supporting these services is also changing. Thirty-five percent of financial institutions plan to implement centralized payment hubs within 12 to 18 months. Those hubs are designed to coordinate multiple payment networks, giving institutions a common layer for routing transactions across instant and traditional rails as payment choices expand.
