Atellah, the secretary general of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), entered the race with years of experience representing doctors in negotiations, protests and campaigns over their pay, working conditions and career progression.
His political bid, announced in September, seeks to translate that experience into representation at the constituency level. He has said the principles that guided his advocacy for medical professionals would also shape his approach to serving Lang’ata residents.
“I have spent years standing with doctors on the streets, at negotiation tables and in difficult conversations where the welfare and dignity of our medics were at stake,” Atellah said when announcing his political ambitions. “The fight for doctors taught me something simple: when you are entrusted with the responsibility to serve, you cannot afford to look away.”
How Atellah’s Kibera roots feature in his campaign
According to the poll, Atellah’s personal connection to the constituency is another pillar of his political message. He grew up in Gatwekera, Kibera, and has spoken about wanting other children in Lang’ata to access the opportunities that helped shape his own life.
His proposed agenda includes reforms to bursary distribution, youth skills development and career guidance, alongside measures to protect informal traders and artisans and strengthen safeguards against evictions in informal settlements.
He has also advocated for local enterprise participation in public procurement, arguing for greater economic opportunities for residents.
According to the poll analysis shared alongside the results, Atellah’s support is linked to his grassroots engagement, accessibility and appeal among young people and women. The analysis also points to his policy proposals and experience in organising healthcare workers as factors that could distinguish him from his rivals.
Abbas, who is placed second at 24%, is described in the same analysis as facing challenges with grassroots organisation beyond his strongholds. Those assessments have not been independently verified.
