Limitless Foundation Executive Director, Njavwa Chibeka has called for continued protection of children in the digital space.
Ms Chibeka told the media in an interview today that social media plays a vital role in encouraging creativity and innovation, further saying it is, however, not free of cyberbullying and sexual exploitation of children.
She pointed out that there is a need to invest in age appropriate online safety education in schools, churches, communities and homes.
“The environment needs to not only offer platforms to learn and grow but also provide protection for children in the digital space,” she said.
Ms Chibeka further said that technology companies should innovate spaces that allow for parental guidance to regulate what children should access online.
She also advised that school curriculums must integrate digital protection for children, adding that all stakeholders should embrace digital protection as a shared responsibility.
Ms Chibeka has since called on the government to intensify measures that will support laws that protect children in the digital space and raise awareness for the community to know relevant stakeholders to approach in matters of violation.
“There is need to improve the mechanism such as the reporting channels for parents to know where to report such cases,” said Ms Chibeka.
