Cristiano Ronaldo has been slapped with a 30-day suspension and a £215 fine following his explosive walkout from the Portugal national team camp earlier this month.
The Portuguese FA’s disciplinary council upheld the charge against the 41-year-old in full, ruling the Al-Nassr forward intentionally breached Article 160(1) of their regulations.
The saga erupted on October 2 when Ronaldo abruptly packed his bags and left the squad's Copenhagen base on the eve of a Nations League clash against Denmark. The walkout was the boiling point of a bitter fallout with new head coach Jorge Jesus. After stewing on the bench as an unused substitute during a September 28 win over Norway, Ronaldo learned he would also be omitted from the starting XI against the Danes.
Taking to social media with a lengthy open letter, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner accused Jesus of an "absolute breach of trust," claiming the manager had twice broken his word regarding his role in the setup. Jesus firmly denied making any such agreements.
Yet, despite the fiery exit, Ronaldo swiftly accepted accountability. Apologising for abandoning his teammates and failing to acknowledge the fans after the Norway game, the veteran explicitly stated he deserved to be punished.
Crucially, Ronaldo confirmed he is not calling time on his international career as he relentlessly hunts down 1,000 career goals. The door also remains wide open from the federation's side; following Portugal's 2-1 win over Denmark in his absence, both Jesus and Portuguese FA president Pedro Proença expressed their desire to welcome him back once the punishment is served.
While the FA's statement did not specify if the 30-day sanction accounts for time already served provisionally since proceedings opened on October 9, Portugal are next in Nations League action against Denmark on November 14.
Whenever he does return, Ronaldo remains the undisputed cornerstone of Portugal's history, holding the men's world records for both international goals (146) and appearances (234), having led his nation to Euro 2016 glory and two Nations League titles.
