Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi has proposed changes to motorcycle manufacturing standards to ensure the permanent installation of side-view mirror supports to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents.
The CTO has written to the Punjab secretary for industries, urging the introduction of manufacturing standards that would make side-view mirrors a more permanent feature of motorcycles.
According to the letter, 62% of traffic accidents in Lahore occurred due to improper signaling and failure to take precautions while changing lanes. Riding without side-view mirrors further increases the risk of collisions, as motorcyclists cannot properly monitor approaching traffic.
Shirazi noted that helmet compliance has improved significantly, reaching 97% on model roads and exceeding 88% on other roads. However, he stressed that side-view mirrors are equally important for rider safety and should be used alongside helmets.
The proposal recommends permanently fixing the rods that support side-view mirrors to motorcycles while allowing the mirrors themselves to be removed when necessary. It also calls for measures to discourage riders from removing their mirrors.
The CTO said the proposed changes would help motorcyclists monitor vehicles approaching from behind and either side, allowing them to change lanes more safely and reducing the risk of accidents and fatalities.
He also called for consultations with relevant authorities and motorcycle manufacturers to discuss the proposed safety measures.
